North and South Strand Councils

The North and South Strand Councils are made up of chamber business members located in the North Strand and South Strand. The councils primary roles are to address issues and interests of businesses in their respective areas and coordinate with other organizations with common goals.

May 1, 2012

Candidates running for Horry County State Senate District 28 and Horry County State House District 104 delivered brief keynote address to attendees and participated in a Q&A session.

March 23, 2012
The North Strand Council held a luncheon with South Carolina 1st District U.S. Congressman Tim Scott on March 23 at the Prince Resort in North Myrtle Beach. Following a lunch buffet, Scott addressed the council on topics such as the Highway Reauthorization Bill, infrastructure projects, job creation, and tax reform. He also expressed his concern for hotels having to meet the new Americans with Disabilities Act to put pool lifts in all public pools.

Scott stated he agrees with the ADA regulation but that hotels need more lenient ways to meet the requirements. With the creation of the new South Carolina 7th Congressional District, Scott stated he will continue to look out for the needs of the Grand Strand.

Feb. 7, 2012
The North Strand Council met on Feb. 7, 2012, at the Dye Club at Barefoot Resort. John Bullard, director of Parks & Recreation for the city of North Myrtle Beach, presented an informative update on the future sports tourism complex. Charlene Lynam, community & special events director, presented an update for the North Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce.

Oct. 6, 2011
The North Strand Council partnered with the North Myrtle Beach Chamber & CVB to host the North Strand Leadership Forum on Thursday, Oct. 6, 2011, at the Avista Resort. Panelists for the moderated Q&A session included S.C. Rep. Tracy Edge, Horry Co. Council Chairman Tom Rice, North Myrtle Beach Mayor Marilyn Hatley, North Myrtle Beach Council members Jay Baldwin, Bob Cavanaugh and Doris Williams. Following the session, the approximately 50 attendees enjoyed a meet-and-greet reception.

Aug. 2, 2011
The North Strand Council met on Aug. 2, 2011, at the Ocean Creek Resort & Conference Center. Chairman Billy McGonigal welcomed the attendees and introduced Brad Lofton, president & CEO Myrtle Beach Regional Economic Development Council. Lofton present an analysis by the consulting firm, Strategic Development Group Inc. Suggested targets for business development in Horry County are service center or large corporations with redundant operations, aircraft maintenance and related aircraft service businesses, manufacturing that focuses on resort areas such as security systems, golf carts and related products, boats and boat parts. Other manufacturing related to barge traffic and light assembly has good potential once the Bucksport site is developed.

May 6, 2011
The North Strand Council met on May 6, 2011, at the Ocean Drive Beach & Golf Resort. Kevin Blayton, public works director for North Myrtle Beach, and David Gilreath, public works director for Horry County, presented an informative update on current and future infrastructure projects. Jim Eggen, with Myrtle Beach Seaside Resorts, updated the audience on the activities of the North Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce.

Surfside Beach Candidates Forum

Update on legislative issues and introduction of candidates for mayor and Surfside Beach Town Council.

Dec. 7, 2011
A Holiday Mixer was held at Prestwick Country Club with more than 80 members attending. Members had the opportunity to enjoy food, spirits and networking.

Nov 9, 2011
The chamber and the South Strand Council hosted the South Strand Leadership Forum at Inlet Affairs in Murrells Inlet. Horry County, Georgetown County representatives and Surfside Beach elected officials participated in a question and answer session. This was followed by food, beverage and networking.

July 27, 2011
The chamber and the South Strand Council hosted a breakfast for the South Strand Membership on July 27 at Inlet Affairs in Murrells Inlet. There were about 70 people in attendance. S.C. Rep. Nelson Hardwick spoke on I-73 and the Southern Evacuation Lifeline ... SELL. The chamber's new MBACC Board Chairman Richard Singleton told the group some of his plans and goals for the coming year. Surfside Beach Mayor K. Allen Deaton talked about television promotions for the Town of Surfside Beach. The promotions were a partnership with the Town of Surfside Beach and the chamber. The council has been invited to participate in a South Strand Business Summit on Aug. 25.
