Wild Water & Wheels celebrates employees
Last week, we asked members to let us know how they recognize outstanding employees. Karen Pierce, group sales/marketing director with Wild Water Ventures, LLC, says that Wild Water & Wheels loves rewarding their employees. "We have a young staff (age wise) and we try hard during the 99 days we are open for the season to make Wild Water & Wheels a fun place to work. Each year, around 50 percent of our staff is first-time workers so we feel it's important to keep the moral high and at the end of the day it will show in great customer service. Throughout the summer, employees spin a wheel with prizes on payday and we have contests with different departments for group prizes. We also adopt a charity each summer that our employees get involved with and as a group we raise funds or items for that charity. We have two employee cook-outs during the season and the staff can play in the park after hours."

Tell us how you use noncash incentives, rewards and recognition to impact your success. Send us a quick email and we'll share your employee recognition ideas in a future Grand Strander Express.

Half of small businesses have no plan for continuing service after disaster strikes

Even after seeing the devastation and lasting impact on businesses of Superstorm Sandy, the biggest disaster to hit the United States in more than five years, most small businesses have not taken needed steps to be better prepared for disasters, according to a new study by the American Red Cross. The viability of businesses in the wake of a disaster is a critical factor in the recovery of the local community. However, the study shows that 49 percent of small businesses don't have a strategy in place to continue providing services to customers in the event of an emergency or disaster. Planning your steps ahead of time really makes a difference when you need to take action on the spot. It's free. It's easy. It's online.

SWA expands Recycling Incentive Program
Horry County Solid Waste Authority (SWA) continues to look for innovative ways to educate and inspire recycling efforts throughout the county. Recently, the SWA expanded its Recycling Incentive Program which encourages waste haulers within the county to increase their recycling efforts. The previous programs only offered fee reductions for the recycling of construction and demolition materials that were brought to the county's landfill. This expanded Recycling Incentive Program will include a reduction in disposal fees for Municipal Solid Waste being brought to the county's landfill by contracted haulers who are willing to go into a long-term recycling and disposal agreement with the SWA. An incentive fee schedule has been developed and the reduction will depend on the amount of recyclables brought from within Horry County into the SWA's Material Recycling Facility. No volume guarantees are required.

Since the enactment of the county's Flow Control ordinance and the Recycling Incentive Program in 2009, the SWA has rebated approximately $290,000 to date to its construction and demolition waste disposal customers. With this expanded Recycling Incentive Program, it is estimated that waste disposal customers could receive up to $400,000 a year in recycling incentives from the SWA.

Recycling is important as it helps in lessening the nonbiodegradable waste, which takes time to decompose and affects the natural environment negatively. The process relieves the burden on land, as it helps in clearing the spaces that would otherwise be filled by the waste and preserves space in current landfills while reducing the need for additional landfills.

For more information on the Recycling Incentive Program or to learn more about ways to recycle, visit the Horry County Solid Waste Authority.

GED testing undergoes changes in 2014
In 2014, GED testing as we know it will cease. After January 2014, test-takers will no longer use pencil and paper. Everything will be completed on computer, including essay writing. There will be two separate scoring categories: high school curriculum knowledge and preparedness for entering college or a career. Ultimately, it will be harder to obtain a GED diploma once these changes go into effect - test-takers must have keyboarding skills and more knowledge in math will be required. Horry County Schools Adult and Community Education is encouraging people to take their GED test this year. Register for classes and testing.

Good news for the new year
The beginning of 2013 comes with some good news for all our chamber members. A recent study by The Schapiro Group, an Atlanta-based strategic consulting firm, reveals that being active in a local chamber of commerce is an effective business strategy. The national survey of 2,000 adults shows that two-thirds of consumers believe that chamber members use good practices, are reputable, care about their customers, and are involved in the community.

Further, if respondents know that a small business is a member of its local chamber, the business enjoys a 49 percent increase in its favorability rating, a 73 percent increase in consumer awareness, a 68 percent increase in its local reputation and an 80 percent increase in the likelihood that consumers will patronize the business in the future.

When consumers know that a national restaurant franchise is a member of the local chamber, they are 68 percent more likely to eat at the franchise in the next few months and 58 percent more likely to eat at the franchise more often. In the insurance industry, when consumers know that an insurance company is a member of the local chamber, they are 36 percent more likely to think favorably of the company and 36 percent more likely to consider buying insurance from it.

Finally among the findings, if a company shows that it is highly involved in its local chamber, consumers are 10 percent more likely to think that its products stack up better against competition.

Chamber members enjoy greater credibility among the buying public as a result of their membership. As we've said before and what the survey bears out is that the more involved you are, the more likely your business will benefit.

It also supports our Shop Our Members campaign to promote local businesses. Make a resolution in 2013 to support local business through your purchasing decisions.

A new and improved VisitMyrtleBeach.com has been launched with a complete redesign. CVB marketing officials say the new site is well designed to meet the ever-growing and ever-changing online and mobile demands of its consumers. The work was centered on three main areas of improvement: facilitating a better overall user and visitor experience, maintaining and improving the position of the destination's brand, and helping increase business for community partners through more website referrals. The website features improved search and navigation and better overall functionality, both vacation and group planning management, and special deals and discounts.
