Shelter Locations

This list is provided as a resource only. Shelters listed below may not be opened or may change during the approach of a storm. Tune to radio and television stations for current information. Visit the Horry County Hurricane Information Center for directions to the shelters. Waccamaw Regional Transportation Authority, known as The Coast RTA, will provide rides to the area's shelters. Visit The Coast RTA for evacuation pickup points.

Special Medical Needs Shelter

If you or a loved one has special medical needs, you should contact the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (SCDHEC) regarding their special medical needs shelter. In the event of a hazard, such as a hurricane, officials will direct you to call 855-472-3432 to gain admission to the Special Medical Needs Shelter. 


Shelter Checklist

  • Baby food and diapers
  • Blankets, pillows and/or sleeping bags
  • Cards, games, books
  • Drinking water
  • Eating utensils
  • Extra batteries
  • Favorite toy or blanket
  • First-aid kit
  • Identification and valuable papers
    (such as tax bills, drivers licenses, utility bills, insurance papers, home inventories, important telephone numbers, etc.)
  • Medicine
  • Nonperishable food
  • One flashlight per person
  • Toiletries
  • Do not bring pets, firearms or alcohol. In planning for the hurricane season, do not forget your pets. If an evacuation is necessary, pet owners are urged to make arrangements to evacuate their animals as well.
