The holiday season is upon us all and we at the SC Vocational Rehabilitation Department are working hard to provide our clients with the best gift of all ... a chance to go to work, provide for their families and change their lives. Our mission is to enable eligible South Carolinians with disabilities to prepare for, achieve and maintain competitive employment. We work diligently throughout the year to accomplish this goal and this year we are making an extra end of year effort through our Gift of Placement Program. To do this we need the help of our community business owners and chamber partners. We place clients in a wide range of workplace environments; everything from landscaping and construction to retail, restaurant and graphics design. Our clients work hard to develop and improve their job skills through participation in our Job Readiness Work Training Center in Conway. Special programs such as our Janitorial Training Program, ServeSafe and Customer Service Certifications help to ensure that they are well prepared for entry into the work force. Each client also receives hands-on classroom instruction on topics such as workplace etiquette, communication for success, and professionalism in the workplace. Perhaps most importantly, our clients have a strong desire to be successful and are motivated to work resulting in an employee that will not only be at work every day but will be glad to be there! Companies across the state who work with VR (such as the Walgreens Distribution Center in Anderson with over 200 hires) have come to realize not only the financial benefits available through tax incentives and paid on the job training programs, but they also learn firsthand that it is our clients' willingness and desire to work that make them stand out.
For more information on how you can assist SCVRD in our Gift of Placement Program, contact David Edwards, business development specialist, at firstname.lastname@example.org, or by phone at (843) 248-2235, fax (843) 248-7188. Employers that sign up and participate in the Gift of Placement and hire a VR client will be recognized at a formal SC Vocational Rehabilitation program next year.
