Leading Business of the Month Sponsored by South State Bank

Leading Business of the Month

A chamber member since 1986, The Carolina Opry started the same year by Calvin Gilmore as a 1,000-seat theater in Surfside Beach. When shows sold out steadily a second show, The Dixie Jubilee, was added in North Myrtle Beach. The second show soon sold out nightly, too, prompting Gilmore to construct a 2,200-seat theater in 1993 which is still used today.

The Carolina Opry has garnered a variety of accolades through the years from media outlets such as USA Today, The New York Post, The Hollywood Reporter and Variety Magazine among others. It also was awarded the South Carolina Governor’s Cup – the state’s highest tourism award.

Five shows, including a seasonal production “The Christmas Show of the South,” run nightly except most Sundays at The Carolina Opry. ”TCO” is the theater’s signature production featuring two-hours of high-energy music, comedy and dance. “Time Warp” will take you back in time to celebrate the music of the 60s, 70s and 80s. “Thunder and Light” is a dance, laser and magic show staring the hip-hop clogging group All That! “LIGHT” is a 45-minute laser light show series set to different music including the Beatles, Led Zepplin and Pink Floyd.

The theater also holds additional special events such as performances by Wynonna and the Big Noise and The Charles Daniels Band in March.
