Hurricane Idalia Cone Map - 8-30-2023Horry and Georgetown counties are under tropical storm warnings as well as high surf advisories and coastal flood warnings in advance of Hurricane Idalia.

The storm, which made landfall in western Florida as a major hurricane, is expected to be at tropical storm strength as it moves toward coast of South Carolina.

On Tuesday, Gov. Henry McMaster declared a state of emergency ahead of the storm, allowing the state to begin preparations for potential impacts.

The Forecast

The latest briefing from the National Weather Service in Wilmington, N.C. forecasts the storm affecting the Grand Strand beginning Wednesday evening and continuing into Thursday.

Sustained winds of 35-45 mph and gusts up to 60 mph are expected along the coast for Horry and Georgetown counties. Inland areas should expect sustained winds of 25-35 mph with gusts up to 45 mph.

Low impacts from storm surge are possible, particularly during high tide Wednesday night and Thursday morning.

The NWS says heavy rain is expected and flash flooding is likely, with risks increasing for inland areas where 8-10 inches of rain is possible. The coastal areas are expected 3-6 inches of rain.
