Leading Business of the Month Sponsored by South State Bank

Leading Business of the Month

Sitting a stone’s throw from the ocean is a landmark that's championed visual arts on the Grand Strand for more than two decades.

The Franklin G. Burroughs-Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum is our August Leading Business of the Month sponsored by South State Bank.

The art museum, which opened in 1997, is named for the founders of what was then the Myrtle Beach Farms Company which donated the land for the building. In June 2003, the art museum's doors opened even wider with free admission for all though donations are welcomed.

Exhibits change a few times each year. Artists with ties to the Grand Strand, the Carolinas or the South are featured often along with nationally renowned artists such as Ansel Adams, Frank Lloyd Wright and Norman Rockwell. Each spring showcases work by Horry and Georgetown high schoolers.

The Making Waves exhibit featuring art by Drew Brophy, an internationally renowned surf artist who was born and raised in Myrtle Beach, continues through the middle of September.

Three collections will finish out 2018. Collection Connections, A Visual Exploration of Southern Heritage, opens Sept. 11. As the name suggests, the exhibit is made of about 40 works from the museum’s permanent collections with work by Southern artists including William H. Clark, Cassandra Gillens and Jonathan Green.

Starting Sept. 27, visitors can enjoy work by Easton Selby who grew up in Mississippi and now lives in Conway where he is head of the visual arts department at Coastal Carolina University. Selby's current art centers around themes of religion and Southern folklore.

The final exhibit opens Oct. 4 and features art by Sherry Strickland Martin. An Horry County native, Martin is a professional artist and currently teaches art at St. James High School.

It’s more than just exhibits at the art museum. There’s also an education component with programs designed for kids or adults.

New to the museum is the Lineta Pritchard Pottery Studio. Opened earlier this year, the studio offers classes for ages 16 and older and held summer camps for children. Inside the studio are six pottery wheels, an area for hand-building, stations for glazing and cleaning and a separate kiln room.

The art museum is open daily except Mondays.
