DEI Educational Session on Identity Markers and Gender Pronouns Set for June 16

On Thursday, June 16, 2022, from 9 to 11 a.m., the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce (MBACC) will host an educational session titled “Why Identity Markers and Pronouns Matter.”

Guest speaker Amanda Masterpaul will share her insight on the importance of gender identity markers such as male, female, a blend of both or neither, as well as gender pronouns such as he/his/his, she/her/hers or they/them/theirs. Participants will learn how to respect personal identity and properly use pronouns as a means for fostering deepened relationships and inclusivity in the workplace.

Masterpaul is the co-founder of the Passion for the Possible Professional + Leadership Development team and is a lecturer in the Women’s and Gender Studies Program at Coastal Carolina University. She currently serves on the City of Myrtle Beach’s Human Rights Commission, and is a member of MBACC’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Council. Masterpaul has organized community-centered partnerships and civic engagement efforts addressing areas such as racial justice, gender and LGBTQ+ equality, and housing security.

The session is part of the chamber’s Educated Voices on Leading and Valuing Equity (EVOLVE) series sponsored by TD Bank and presented by the chamber’s DEI Council. EVOLVE sessions share insights on diversity opportunities for organizations and how to develop a more inclusive culture to grow business and provide a stronger workplace.

Continuing education units will be awarded for participation in EVOLVE sessions with a certificate of completion given to those who attend all four sessions in 2022. Remaining sessions include “DEI Vocabulary Basics” on Sept. 20 and “Inclusive Leadership” on Nov. 1.
