If you want to sip something sweet, you ought to visit Duplin Winery, our September Leading Business of the Month sponsored by South State Bank.
Duplin Winery specializes in wine made from muscadine grapes, a variety native to the southeastern United States. They bottle about 40 different types.
Locally, you can visit them for a tasting experience in North Myrtle Beach next to Barefoot Landing. Their wines are stocked by most grocers, too. They still operate in Rose Hill, North Carolina, where the family business grew its roots.
It all started in the 1970s when D.C. Fussell Sr. and his two sons, David and Dan, started growing the muscadine grapes, which were being sold for about $350 per ton to a winery in New York. Within three years, that price was slashed in half during a recession, so the family decided to make the wine themselves to salvage their business and investment. The whole family pitched in to make it work.
Duplin Winery is now run by the third generation of the Fussell family with Jonathan Fussell leading retail operations and Dave Fussell Jr. serving as president and CEO. There’s a good chance you’ll run into the brothers during a visit, as both are heavily involved in day-to-day operations.
Duplin Winery joined Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce in the fall of 2014 ahead of the grand opening of the North Myrtle Beach location in 2015. In North Myrtle Beach, you’ll find spacious tasting rooms and an inviting deck.
Community is important to the Fussell family. Local musicians are featured frequently providing live entertainment. The winery has served as a drop off location for charities including Toys for Tots and Freedom Readers. And, they’ve been a gracious sponsor providing wines for our Volunteer of the Year event each year since opening in North Myrtle Beach.
Private events can be scheduled, too. They’ll be the host of our first Women & Wine Wednesdays Oct. 16, 2019.

About Leading Business of the Month
The first Wednesday of every month, Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce announces a Leading Business of the Month.
