For more than 50 years, Horry Georgetown Technical College has provided post-secondary education opportunities across three campuses – one in Conway, one in Myrtle Beach and one in Georgetown.
HGTC is our May Leading Business of the Month sponsored by South State Bank. It’s the fourth largest technical college in South Carolina and offers more than 65 degree and certificate programs. Arts, science, business, information/computer technology, nursing, culinary arts, dental hygiene, criminal justice technology and early childhood development are among the many educational offerings at HGTC.
The college was initially established in 1961 as Horry-Marion-Georgetown Technical Education Center. It wasn’t until 1966, by which time it had assumed its current name, did it receive it’s first class of students with 123 members. Since that first graduating class, HGTC has had more than 17,000 students graduate with 90 percent becoming part of the workforce in Horry and Georgetown counties.
Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce partners with HGTC in many ways including the offering of some classes at discounted prices through HGTC’s continuing education and workforce development programs.
HGTC also has offerings for community members that aren’t pursuing further education. Find affordable upscale lunches prepared by second-year culinary arts students at the Fowler Dining Room on the Conway campus Tuesdays through Thursdays. There’s also dental clinics which specializes in dental exams, cleanings and X-rays. The Charles F. Freeman Community Dental clinic helps to meet the needs of qualifying patients who may delay treatment for financial reasons. More information about all of the community resources can be found at hgtc.edu/community.

About Leading Business of the Month
The first Wednesday of every month, Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce announces a Leading Business of the Month. This special promotion, sponsored by South State Bank, recognizes a company that has been a member of Myrtle Beach Area Chamber for a minimum of five years. The business is randomly selected. The company displays a banner at their place of business for one month recognizing them as the Leading Business of the Month.
The Shuckin’ on the Strand Oyster Roast is the Grand Strand’s largest oyster roast, open to the public and serving up oysters, food and fixins. All proceeds benefit the Substitutes for Santa, an annual event hosted by GSYP every December to give local children a Christmas.
