Horry County Literacy Council is our January Nonprofit of the Month sponsored by South Atlantic Bank.
The nonprofit seeks to improve the lives of youth, adults and families by teaching basic literacy & life skills for economic and social success. They offer free, confidential tutoring tailored to the needs of each student. The literacy council helps more than 200 people each month.
Horry County Literacy Council was founded in 1976 and earned it’s official nonprofit status in 1981. They began by serving out-of-school teenagers and adults and soon expanded to serve people learning English as a second language.
In 2012, the literacy council received accreditation with the national organization ProLiteracy which allowed them to expand services to assist people age six and older with learning difficulties such as dyslexia.
Demand for their services continues to grow and the literacy council is always looking for more volunteers to pair with students and adult who need support. Interested volunteers can learn more about how to help at horycountyliteracy.org. Financial contributions also may be made online.
Sponsorship provides our investors the opportunity for recognition and publicity.
