How to Avoid Gaps in Your Insurance Coverage

Trey Mauck

by Trey Mauck, Founder/Principal Agent, Integrated Insurance Solutions

Buying insurance should be more than a simple purchase. It should be an informative exchange between you and your agent. By consulting with an insurance agent allows them to determine your insurance needs.

Here are a couple of examples of what to discuss with your agent regarding home, life and auto coverage:

  1. Discussing how close you live to the coast or any water allows us to determine your flood risk, whereas most clients assume their home policy would cover their damage if their house flooded, which is not the case. A flood policy needs to be purchased.
  2. Do you own jewelry? There is very limited coverage on a home policy but a special floater can be added to avoid gaps in coverage. A lot of people assume if they drop their wedding band down the sink the home policy will cover them and that is not always the case. These types of conversations are critical.
  3. Does the client want less or more uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage than the policy gives to protect you against an accident that could occur with another vehicle that is not insured or does not have enough insurance to cover your own car and injuries sustained?
  4. Do you need a rental car if your car is in an accident and being repaired?
  5. Does purchasing only state minimum limits to save money jeopardize your financial position?
  6. Did you just get married and should look at life insurance?
  7.  Are your children off to college and you need to invest more in retirement and insure a new vacation home?
  8.  Are you 18 and just need auto insurance at the best rate?
  9. Do you own businesses and high value assets and need an umbrella to protect your money?
  10.  Do you rent and need to replace items in the event a claim happens as the landlords policy has no coverage for you on his policy?

The agent should take time with you and explain each coverage that you are purchasing to ensure there are no gaps in coverage.
