Myrtle Beach Area Chamber Now Offers Complimentary Electric Vehicle Charging at Oak Street Visitors Center

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.—The Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce (MBACC) and Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) is pleased to unveil a new electric vehicle (EV) charging station at its visitors center and offices located at 1200 N. Oak St. in Myrtle Beach.

During a ribbon-cutting ceremony on July 31, 2023, MBACC and CVB President and CEO Karen Riordan said the EV charging station is a significant step forward in the chamber’s commitment to sustainability, eco-friendly practices and supporting the growing use of EVs.

"By launching this state-of-the-art EV charging station, the Myrtle Beach area is taking yet another stride toward promoting sustainable travel practices," Riordan said. “Our chamber and CVB understands the increasing importance of eco-conscious initiatives and acknowledges the vital role that EVs play in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.”

The cutting-edge ChargePoint Dual Output system provides complimentary charging at two reserved parking spaces at the chamber allowing for the simultaneous charging of two EVs. Since 2007, ChargePoint has been committed to providing one of the largest charging networks in North America.

Key features of the EV charging station include:

  ◦ Optimal Charging: The charging station is equipped with cutting-edge technology that offers ChargePoint’s Level Two commercial charging capabilities, allowing EV owners to quickly replenish their vehicle’s battery.

  ◦ Compatibility: The charging station supports a wide range of electric vehicles, ensuring that nearly all EV owners can take advantage of this service.

  ◦ Easy-to-Use Interface: The user-friendly interface makes charging straightforward, even for first-time users, and provides real-time charging status updates.

  ◦ Energy Savings: The ENERGY STAR Certified EV Charger provides the same functionality as non-certified products but uses 40 percent less energy in standby mode, reducing its impact on the environment.

The installation was made possible, in part, by a $25,000 EVolve Grant from Santee Cooper, South Carolina’s largest power provider.

“We’re very thankful to Santee Cooper for approving the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber for this grant and its overall effort to support additional EV charging stations across the Grand Strand. These efforts will continue to facilitate EV travel for our residents and visitors,” Riordan said.

The chamber is also working with SanteeCooper to find additional areas within the destination that may benefit from offering EV charging capabilities.
