Starting in January 2023, Ryan Swaim will lead the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce (MBACC) Board of Directors as the newly elected chair. Swaim is currently serving his third term on the chamber board and is the general manager of Dunes Realty Vacation Rentals in Garden City Beach, S.C.

“I’m honored to be elected as the board chair for such a commendable organization as the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce during a time when the Grand Strand is experiencing such exponential growth and revitalization. Through our mission to promote, protect and improve our region, the chamber and its board of directors will continue efforts — with zeal — to build a better community for us all,” Swaim said.

In addition, he thanked current Board Chair Alex Husner for her leadership over the past year. “Alex’s dedication to the chamber and its pursuits deserves the outmost praise. It will be challenging to fill her shoes as the board chair and leader,” he said.

Swaim received his degree in marketing from Clemson University and served as an account manager for Brandon Advertising before making the move to Dunes Realty in 1999 and then its vacation rental division in 2006. He is a graduate of Leadership Grand Strand (LGS) Class 21, previously serving on the LGS Board of Regents, and has chaired the boards of the Garden City Beach Community Association and the Horry County Chapter of the March of Dimes, and is a three-time chairman of the Horry County March for Babies. He is a member and past president of the Myrtle Beach Sunrise Rotary Club, and a member of the Board of Directors of the Grand Strand Business Alliance.

Most of his free time is spent outdoors, either on a boat, a bicycle or at a Clemson football game. He lives in Garden City Beach with his wife Cindy and daughter Delaney, a current freshman at Clemson.

In addition to electing Swaim, MBACC board members elected eight new directors who will formally join the board in January and serve a three-year term:

  • Dr. Michael T. Benson, president, Coastal Carolina University
  • Chad Carlson, chief financial officer, Burroughs & Chapin
  • Hatton Gravely, director of mission advancement, YMCA of Coastal Carolina
  • Lori Heafner, vice president of the Institute of Excellence and Development at Horry-Georgetown Technical College
  • Mayur Jarem, owner, president and CEO, New Horizon Management
  • Mark Loos, vice president of operations, Tidelands Health
  • Bhumi Patel, partner, Burr & Forman LLP
  • Jay Smith, general manager, Prestwick Golf Club

“To have such a diverse and knowledgeable group of local businesspeople joining the chamber board is truly an asset to our entire community,” said MBACC President and CEO Karen Riordan. “These new members will unite with our existing board to further strengthen our business community, providing an enhanced quality of life for all of our residents.”

Sixteen members will remain on the board next year as their terms continue through 2023 or 2024. The MBACC board is made up of volunteers who are nominated and elected by chamber members to serve three-year terms.
